20/20 Vision isn’t enough
There is more to sight than seeing 20/20. From driving a car to staying balanced on stairs, life’s most basic activities require a complex range of functional vision skills and assessing these skills takes more than an eye chart.

Functional vision is how well the eyes and brain work together to process what is seen and it plays an important role in daily life. If left untreated, functional vision issues in adults can seriously impact quality of life. We can help.

What if a simple assessment could help your child rediscover the excitement of learning?
1 in 4 children has a vision problem that affects learning. That’s 25% of children that we can help, simply by assessing and addressing the way their eyes and brain work together. We get excited about this and the success of our patients, and we are passionate about educating parents and care givers about the role functional vision plays in learning.

There are 17 individual visual skills that are vital for reading and learning.
We can review them all, identify areas needing improvement, and develop a custom treatment plan.

Is it really ADHD or Dyslexia?
Many vision issues can be corrected with glasses or contacts, but did you know that some common conditions can also mask deeper vision struggles that make otherwise engaged children appear to have trouble with focus and comprehension?

As a result, children can be misdiagnosed with disorders like ADHD or dyslexia.

Functional Vision not only impacts reading and behavior,
it also affects balance, sports performance, and overall quality of life.

Is your child frustrated with school or acting up in class?
When kids are struggling they often employ coping mechanisms like avoiding work and acting out - these mechanisms can look a lot like the behavioral issues that are currently prevalent in school-aged kids.

We offer insight into functional vision related issues - from basic vision correction to more in-depth vision therapy - that can not only help alleviate symptoms, but can often reverse these vision issues entirely.

These symptoms may indicate that it’s time to evaluate functional vision:
Headaches    Difficulty concentrating
Eyestrain  Rereading or skipping lines of text
Poor handwriting    Difficulty recognizing words

The Functional Vision Assessment
Standard eye exams check for static visual acuity and physical health. Our Functional Vision program goes beyond the basics and evaluates how the two eyes function together.

Through a brief exam, we are able to identify issues with dynamic vision skills, including eye alignment, eye teaming, depth perception, object tracking, gross visual motor, and visual perception and integration.

Next, we translate the data into easy-to-read, quantifiable reports, and our providers then develop a customized treatment plan including at-home exercises.

Functional Vision Basics
Tracking
Tracking or moving the eyes efficiently is key to keeping place when reading. Eye tracking issues can cause eyes to jump around, skipping words or lines. Poor tracking not only makes reading a challenge, it also makes it difficult to follow a moving object, like a ball.

Focusing
Inadequate focus makes it difficult to switch from near to far objects and keep both clear. This creates issues for children when they are moving their eyes between their desk and the board at school. The child’s focusing system struggles to keep things clear causing eye fatigue.

Eye Teaming
When the eyes aren’t working together, maintaining a single image is difficult. This can cause words to appear to move or may cause double vision. Sometimes, the brain may suppress information coming into one eye, affecting depth perception.

Visual Processing Skills
Visual processing skills are vital to learning. They are used to gather and organize visual information from the world around us, help us decipher things that look similar but are different, like the difference between a “b” and “d”, or “was” from “saw”, and they are key in the ability to remember math facts and spelling words.
